"I think I have overdone it in the garden"

“I think I have overdone it in the garden” is a commonly used phrase at this time of year. We venture out into the forest that has grown outside our homes, and begin cutting a path back to safety. However as the time ticks by, our bodies begin to suffer the consequences.
Just like many animals, we too hibernate over winter, with many of us being a lot less active in our day to day lives. The reduction of activity leads to deconditioning of the muscles which in-turn reduces their strength and stamina.
Gardening is a multi-system activity that not only requires strength and stamina, but also balance, dexterity and patience.
It is important to prepare the body as best you can, before you embark on a mission that could equate to a marathon for your muscles.
Below are my top tips for surviving the start of summer gardening:
1) Start small, aim big
Although you will want to completely overhaul the garden to make it summer ready, try to complete the tasks over a longer timeframe.
2) Set a timer and take a break
If the job does need to be fully completed that day, make sure you take regular breaks.
"Mine’s a tea please!"
3) Complete tasks in a sitting or kneeling position By changing your position you will prevent prolonged bending or over reaching
4) Change jobs frequently This allows you to use different muscle groups and allows others to rest
5) Reward yourself!
The reward can be anything from a delicious cream tea to a gin and tonic. However, make sure you treat your muscles too, with a nice warm bath or shower to help them relax.
